Young people from across Birmingham are being invited to take part in this year’s Birmingham Cathedral Children’s Poetry Festival!
In 2022, over 1000 aspiring young poets wrote inspiring poems on the theme of the Commonwealth Games. This year, our celebration of creativity will be continuing, under the theme of Divine Beauty – an exciting project to conserve our four remarkable stained-glass windows.
Contact us if you’d like to see these windows in person and learn more about them at one of our new Divine Beauty Schools’ Workshops.
Birmingham Poet, Casey Bailey, will be once again supporting the festival, and assisting us in drawing up a shortlist of poems to be read at a special event this summer.
Watch Birmingham Poet, Casey Bailey, perform his powerful poem – Dear Brum.
Find out more about below. Feel free to share this video with any children who wish to be a part of this exciting project to give them a helping hand!
Poetry should be inspired by the world famous stained-glass windows at Birmingham Cathedral. The four colourful windows tell the story of the life of Christ – and include a range of imagery and patterns.
Poems can be free verse, haiku, limerick, acrostic etc. You choose!!
The festival is open to all children from aged from 4-14. All poems submitted will be displayed on the railings in Cathedral Square this summer!
A shortlist of poems will then be chosen to be read by their poets at a wonderful celebration event at Birmingham Cathedral in early July. Poems will be judged and selected across three categories:
Poems can be written on the template provided below or should be on A4 paper with the poem on one side, with the child’s name, age and school / group (if applicable) on the back.
Full colour and outlined colouring sheet templates have been provided if you wish to use these – or start with a blank sheet of paper and come up with your own colourful design!
The deadline for submissions is 26 May 2023.
Poems should be be returned:
By post: Learning Team, Birmingham Cathedral, Colmore Row, Birmingham B3 2QB
By email: Scanned pdf versions of poems can be sent via email to enquiries@birminghamcathedral.com.
