About us

Welcome to our beautiful cathedral where for more than 300 years prayers and praise have been offered to God. This daily worship continues to be at the heart of our cathedral life today.

This remarkable building stands as an enduring witness to the transforming love of God made visible for us in Jesus Christ. It continues to inspire people to go out into the world to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to follow Christ through lives of daring creativity and deep faithfulness. Once amongst fields, Birmingham Cathedral was originally St Philip’s parish church.

At the centre of the growing town of Birmingham, it was designed by Warwickshire architect Thomas Archer in the new English Baroque style and consecrated in 1715. As Birmingham emerged as an influential industrial centre and city of a thousand trades, with waves of people coming to live and work here, the need for a new cathedral became apparent. In 1905 the Bishop of Birmingham, Charles Gore, chose St Philip’s to be the cathedral of the new diocese of Birmingham. Most striking to visitors and worshippers are the exceptionally important set of stained-glass windows designed by Birmingham born artist Edward Burne-Jones and made in the workshop of William Morris. Burne-Jones was born on nearby Bennett’s Hill and baptised in the church. Today visitors from around the world are drawn to see these remarkable examples of Pre-Raphaelite art. I invite you to take time to enjoy their divine beauty.

The cathedral is the spiritual home for a lively Christian community where worship, from the simplest prayer to soaring musical excellence, is always accompanied by a warm welcome. We aspire to pray, to serve and to grow in the love of God and our care of God’s people. More than an artistic treasure, Birmingham Cathedral offers a place of peace, hospitality and welcome. Please light a candle, say a prayer and take comfort in this sacred space.

The Very Reverend Matt Thompson – Th Dean of Birmingham

Almighty God
you have made us for yourself,
and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you.
Teach us to offer ourselves to your service,
that here we may have your peace,
and in the world to come we may see you face to face,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

St Augustine of Hippo
