Environment and Sustainability

Birmingham Cathedral is committed to care for the environment as a key part of our love for God’s Creation.  We are working hard to be Net Zero by 2030, and are particularly delighted to be custodians of one of the major green spaces in the city centre.  We invite you to journey with us in this.

Our Eco Church working group

Our cathedral Eco Church group is working to improve the sustainability of our cathedral, by working through how we will achieve our strategic priority of being good stewards of God’s creation. After achieving our Eco Church Bronze accreditation in 2023, we are exploring way to embed a culture of sustainability throughout our community, as well as aiming to reach Silver and Gold status!

About Eco Church

Eco Church is a learning community of churches of all shapes and sizes open to all denominations. It provides a framework to support your church and its leadership to take practical action on caring for God’s earth. It includes a toolkit of resources, an online award survey, quarterly email update, online events, and conferences – to help churches ‘go green’ in all areas of their life together. The Eco Church approach covers the following areas:

  • Worship and teaching – Embedding creation care in worship, prayer and learning.
  • Buildings – Finding energy efficient and innovative ways to manage places of worship.
  • Land – Nurturing spaces for people and nature.
  • Community and global engagement – Transforming local and global communities and ecosystems.
  • Lifestyle – Encouraging all to live joyfully and sustainably as followers of Christ.

We are encouraging our congregation to bring their own cups for tea and coffee after our Sunday morning Eucharist. Recyclable paper cups will be available, but those who can bring their own are welcome to.

Ecological Examen

The Ecological Examen is a tool for prayer, reflection and action as individuals in their home, parish, school, university or community deepen our call to care for creation and the most vulnerable. Please join the Ignatian Family in seeking a conversion of heart to embrace ecological justice and Pope Francis’ call to care for our common home.
